Day 14 Sober

My former coworker knew I really liked this shirt from Francesca's that said, “Namast’ay at home with my dog” we saw at the mall and she knew I was two weeks sober. I came back to the office after my meeting with a client and saw a bag on my desk. I had a feeling I knew what it was and I was so excited to open it.  It’s just little things like that: when a friend recognizes you’re trying so hard at something, and celebrates with you. The work day was the same as usual:  supe

The Italian Man

I’m sitting at the train station, waiting for the next one to arrive as I just missed the last one to go to work. People are either on their phones with headphones on or standing staring off into the trees. The same lady at the front counter repeats punching in buttons and prints out train tickets. “Round trip?” She always asks. The commute to work is insane. On a good day when public transportation is working and everything is on time, it takes an hour. Typically it takes an

What Brings Families Together

I found out my grandmother on my dad’s side passed away on Friday. My initial reaction was blank. Then I got upset and started crying at work and left early. Then I got angry. I didn’t think I would have these emotions and reactions at all. My dad passed away in 2003–I haven’t spoken too nor seen my grandparents or uncle since the day of my dad’s funeral.  All families have their skeletons, right? I had the same reaction to my grandmother passing as I did to my uncle passing

The Pixie Cut

I am now past my 1.5 years of sobriety and to celebrate, I got an Asymmetric Pixie Haircut while on vacation. It was well received by my boyfriends family in the city where I got it cut. I put pictures up on social media immediately after it happened and I was so excited, though during the process I had moments of “What did I do?!” My family had mixed reactions but overall, it’s just hair. It grows back. I’m still figuring out how to properly style the longer part and how t

Weaning Off

I’ve been slowly weaning off my anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medicine the last few weeks. My doctor said to reduce the dosage by taking 3 pills a day to 2 pills for a week, then 1, then half, then half every other day, then half every 2 days, etc. The first week was difficult. I had headaches everyday and was extremely tired from the afternoon into the night. I didn’t want to be around anyone or talk. The second week I found myself getting irritable, especially at night

Sober St. Patrick’s Day

I went to the local beach the day before Saint Patrick’s Day. The weather was beautiful and the people were interesting. Different age groups smoking cigarettes outside the bars and dancing drunk on the boardwalk.  Lots of green. Most of the trashcans I passed smelled of stale beer. The outside bathrooms smelled of vomit and piss. I started reminiscing about my past St. Patty’s Day experiences. In college I would go out the Saturday before, wearing some high green funky so

Day 2 Sober

I wanted to tell my family and closest friends what I decided. My mom, brother, sister in law and I are on a group chat. I told them, "I don't want to talk about it right  now but I decided to go to AA and stop drinking." My mom initially thought I was sexually assaulted. My brother and sister in law responded in shock but supportive. I still felt ill from Thursday nights shit show (now it’s Saturday). I made breakfast but ate it slow. I didn’t want to throw up again. My roo

Day 1 Sober

After getting to work 4 hours later than usual, I saw my director and asked to speak with him. We went into a conference room and I began the conversation. "I hope I can get through this without crying, but I've had a rough week, and I didn't think it would affect my job until last night." He says, "Well you don't have anything to cry about with your job", I replied, "Well that makes me feel better. But I don't remember leaving the happy hour event last night and I got sick a

Hitting Bottom

When I Hit Bottom and could have Died— I had not been working at my new job for a month yet. This was the same week my ex and I broke up. Not that it's an excuse to drink, but for me it was. I decided to take an Uber to work and back. I wanted to be responsible but also knew I wanted to get drunk at this work event. But not this drunk. I started with a Maryland Mule, switched to Sangria, then a Jalapeño margarita, had a Dark and Stormy, and then I blacked out. My coworker tol

Resources to Help

When my friend introduced me to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) back in 2017, I was in awe with how many resources and support is out there.  I bounced around groups for a few months to see which ones I liked the best but haven’t gone back since early 2018. I went to Atheist groups, groups believing in God, and Gay groups. AA is very much dedicated to God, but it’s really about believing in any higher power. Recently, I’ve been wanting to find an AA home house near me because I re

Tricks to Fake Drinking

Tricks to fake drinking---to trick your mind and others around you to think you’re drinking: 1) Want a drink that looks like a vodka soda? Ask for a club soda with lime and put it in a cocktail drink. People think you’re going hard. 2) Add a splash of cranberry juice to your club soda and with lime to make it look like a mixed drink. 3) Create non-alcoholic cocktails at home, especially during the holidays. There’s actually decent Sangria recipes out there. 4) Ask t
